Overseas candidates

If you are serious about relocating to Asia and finding a suitable role in the region, these tips can help you to make the move successfully:

Job Search from Overseas
Recruiters are happy to speak with candidates outside Asia who are looking to relocate. If you are applying over a job board or email, make sure that you write a covering email explaining your reasons for moving to Asia (e.g. family, spouse being moved here, want some experience in Asia). We need to know that you have put some thought into where the role is based and that you are serious about moving to Asia.

Building your networks in Asia is also important, so research the recruiters working in Asia in your market, send through your CV explaining your career objectives and your interest in Asia, and follow up with a phone call. It may take us some time to find the right role for you, but building your networks in Asia means that when the right role does open up you will be likely to hear about it.

Job Search from Asia
Some people may choose to move over to Asia before they have found a job, or for some it may be necessary (e.g. family reasons). Either way, being here can definitely help with your job search. It may help you get traction with employers and recruiters, as there is no ambiguity about you moving here or concerns that you may decide not to come. It is also easier to build your network once you are here and meeting people face to face.

Prior to making the decision to move, do your research on the market and current job opportunities, speak with current contacts, and start building out your network. Expect the job search to take some time – it is very rare that you will arrive and be placed in a job straight away. Make sure that you know what your living expenses will be, and have enough cash saved up to live comfortably for a period of time.

And have a plan B – if things don’t go to plan, you have already thought through what your next steps will be.

Cost of Living
The cost of living in Asia may be very different to your home country. Rent can be significant, and is something that you should look into prior to relocating. School fees may also be a significant expense, especially if you send your children to international schools.

Expat Packages
In the past, relocating abroad may have meant generous housing, schooling and other expat allowances. Over the last few years however, we have found that large expat benefit packages have largely disappeared.

Languages
Generally, when working in the banking and technology industry in Asia, English is the only language requirement. There are circumstances however, for example a China sales role, when Mandarin or another language may be required.
