Starting Your Job Search

You have decided to begin your job search, so where should you start? It pays to have a clear, well thought out approach to your job search:

    Have a plan

  • What type of role are you looking for?
  • Do you already have most of the relevant experience for this position? If the answer is no, make sure your career aspirations are realistic.
  • When do you want to be in that new position?
  • How are you going to approach your job search – which recruiters, which job boards, which potential employers?
  • Be clear in your mind about what types of roles you are interested in, what salary level, what location, and contract versus permanent roles.
    Be Prepared

  • Have an up to date CV – this is the first impression you make to any future employer or recruiters so make sure it is the right impression.
  • Know the market – consider things like, which companies work in your space, are there particular companies of interest to you, are any companies seeing significant expansion in the areas that you are interested in, and is it a good time to make a career move?
  • Interview Preparation & Techniques – these apply to both interviews with recruiters and prospective employers (link to section).
  • Set realistic expectations – time frames, salary expectations, seniority, role types. If you have done your research, you should know what is realistic for you.
