There are many reasons why working with recruiters or “headhunters” can help you with your job search. Following our tips below will help you maximise your results:
Ask Questions
Make sure that you are being represented in your job search by a recruiter who is good at what they do. Ask each recruiter that you are interested in working with about their experience, knowledge of your market, client base and relationships with hiring managers. You will quickly distinguish the top recruiters from the average ones.
Be Honest
If you don’t want to be a Business Analyst, or don’t want to work for a large corporate then let your recruiter know upfront. This means that we can put roles in front of you that match your career objectives and aspirations.
Misrepresenting your skills, experience or qualifications will be brought to light eventually. Thorough background checks are part or any recruitment process, and you don’t want to delay or potentially derail a job offer because you failed to mention important details concerning your job history. It can be a deal breaker.
Also, be upfront with your recruiter about which companies and recruiters you have already sent your CV to, and who you are already interviewing with. This means we won’t duplicate efforts or represent you to the same client twice, which can reflect badly on you and badly on the agencies involved.
Follow Up
If a recruiter doesn’t call you and you have questions or are waiting on feedback, follow up. We want to know that you are interested in the position.
If you follow up and still have limited response, it may mean that your skill set is not a match for the current job openings. If this is the case, let your recruiter know that you would be interested in any opportunities that fit your career objectives and profile and leave it at that. With the volume of candidates that each recruiter is handling, unfortunately it is not always possible to return every candidate call or respond to every application. We do however keep your details to hand and will be in contact when suitable opportunities come up.
Working With Multiple Recruiters
It can be good to work with more than one recruiter, but keep it to 2-3 at the most. Working with 2-3 recruiters will allow you to get coverage across the majority of employers in your market, but at the same time allow you to keep track of where your CV is being sent, to which companies and against which roles. Having multiple recruiters representing you to the same client reflects badly on you, and badly on the agencies involved.
